Design Approach

Signature Design created a series of inspirational exhibits in the halls of Spelman College that depict the history of Laura Spelman Hall and of women who committed their lives to social justice. A mural is central to the exhibit. Entitled “A Choice to Change the World,” it is arranged in chronological order from left to right, beginning with construction of Laura Spelman Hall in 1880 through to current times. The mural consists of three layers. The background depicts a timeline of uses and changes to Laura Spelman Hall. The next layer depicts changing campus life along with key events in national social justice movements. The top layer is devoted to women social-justice advocates and features Spelman College alumnae, presidents, and scholar, as well as national and international advocates. Hallway monitors play animated quotes by 40 women whose lives changed the world.
