Design Approach

Building on the larger planning team’s typologies, Signature Design is creating a set of interpretive concepts for this former railway corridor that circles the core of Atlanta. In recent years, the corridor has been transformed into a multi-use trail that has gained immense popularity in the city. While the trail is still under development, sections of it are complete. 

Signature Design has envisioned a layered approach to interpretive storytelling that includes trail design elements, signage, and rest stops. The goal of storytelling is to help trail users understand the history of the trail and the communities it passes through. This history includes the stories of plantations, slavery, and post-Civil War entrepreneurial black communities, as well as the effects of gentrification. As part of the development of concepts, Signature Design has interviewed area residents to gather a fuller picture and add multiple perspectives to the designs.
