Design Approach

The Monarch-Chesterfield Levee Trail is a 15.8-mile trail located along the Mississippi River near Chesterfield, Missouri. Rest stops along the trail offer sweeping views of the river and feature themed rock walls, sun-shade trellises, seating, trail donor medallions, and interpretive signs.

Signature Design sought to develop designs that echo the flow and turbulence of the Mississippi River. In fact, Signature Design worked closely with masons to ensure retaining walls were built to ebb and flow like the river. Alongside these symbolic forms of interpretation, signs explain the history of Chesterfield and the impact of the river’s flooding on the city, as well as the history of the levee system that now protects the city. As a whimsical magical accident, the sun-shade trellises play a musical tone when winds blows through them giving visitors a multi-sensory experience as the look out over the river.
